The Sultan Mosque,
A Symbol of Unity and Solidarity of the Muslim Community

The Sultan Mosque or "Masjid Sultan" holds a special place among Singapore Muslims comunity now. Located in the multiracial heart of the Muslim district, this mosque entrusted to Malay, Javanese, Bugis, Arabs, Tamils and Northern Indian Muslims living around the Kampong Glam area in the past.

Owned and managed by Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) now, it became a preserved historical building in 1975 by the Preservation of Monuments Board Act Singapore. They open its door to anyone nowadays including tourist sharing its beauty and history with the world.

Built around 1824-1826, located near istana (palace) of Sultan Hussein whom Raffles selected as Sultan of Singapore at that time, the original "Masjid Sultan" was single storey building with a double-tiered roof.

We shall thank Dennis Santry whose then re-designed the mosque in the Islamic Saracenic style with domes, minarets and balustrades. He adopted design from Taj Mahal, style from Persian, Moorish, Turkish and a classical theme rich with ornaments and features symbolizing some of the Islam ideals and teachings. The re-construction work was completed in 1928.

The main prayer hall designed to hold up to 5,000 worshippers.

Here is the exterior of the Sultan Mosque (main prayer hall & the annex):

The annex was added in 1993 to cater for its growing community designed in the same architectural style and spirit.

How to get there?

Alight at Bugis MRT Station (EW12) then walk towards North Bridge Road direction heading to Golden Landmark Hotel, turn right to Arab Street and you’ll be at No.3 Muscat Street.

This map show you the road direction if you use private car or taxi. I've found it useful for street walker too.
