Singapore Food

Do you have difficulties finding the “best food” in Singapore?

No worries! If you don’t even know what Singapore food is how can you hunt for the best food in Singapore, right? Too many delicious foods are sold here from hawker centre to fancy restaurant. It’s confusing sometimes.

So, what is Singapore Food?

It’s actually formed as early as a time when the first immigrants came to Singapore. These immigrants brought along the type of foods, cooking style, and condiments normally found in their home countries.

Chinese Food Cooking Style in the Food Centre - Singapore Chinese brought along their skill in making noodles and its variety of cooking style such as Wonton Noodles, minced meat noodles, and Hokkien Mie.

Malay introduced the making of the ketupat and food recipes using lemongrass, chilies, coconut, and galangal.

As for Indian, Chapattis and Thosais together with curry powder were always available in their kitchen.

Over the time, the community of Chinese, Malays, Indian and even European influenced each others in the way they prepare their foods and its taste. So now, if you buy chicken curry, you may have Indian curry style, Chinese curry style or Malay curry style.

So, don’t be surprised if you find the best food in Singapore somewhat “Chinese” but taste like Malay food or Indian food. They are all Singapore food! They are different from their original country it supposed to be.

Roti Prata, Singapore - Indian Food The Roti Prata here is not the same with its kind in India. If you are from India, can you find Indian Rojak there? Nope! It’s a strange dish to everyone from India. It’s only available in Singapore though.

The famous Hainanese Chicken Rice which comes with strong ginger-garlic chili sauce is also different with the one sold in Hainan province (China).

Where to go for the best food in Singapore?

Believe it or not, some good foods can be found at the Hawker Centre. It’s cheap & good! The price range is about S$3.00 to S$5.00 per plate/ bowl. You can have it in alfresco dining style or in a fully air conditioned food centre inside the shopping malls.

If this is your first time traveling to Singapore, I will recommend you to visit the nearest food centre from your hotel. It’s a good start to try our local foods. No worries about the quality!
