Chek Jawa Wetlands,
Singapore’s Unique Natural Habitat

My husband, I, and a group of friends visited Chek Jawa Wetlands sometime in second week of November.

We are unlucky because it was raining almost whole day with high-tide. We can’t see much along the shore. We’ll be back for sure.

Chek Jawa is an inter-tidal area, so if you plan to visit this place make sure you check the tides to avoid disappointment.

You’ll see carpet anemones, brittle stars, sea stars, and sea cucumbers during the low-tide which is approximately 0.5 meters and below.

However, we enjoy the beauty of this place from the Coastal and the Mangrove Boardwalks.

Started from the Visitor Centre, we walk about 500m to see the mangroves trees typically found in Pulau Ubin , mud fish, crabs, and mud lobster.

There is also a 21-meter height observation tower named Jejawi Tower. Again, we didn’t climb up this tower due to the weather.

After finishing our walk at Mangrove Loop, we continued walking to the Coastal Loop. This route brought us to the tip of the headland and we enjoyed different views of Chek Jawa.

The only one house...
Beside of the ecosystem, the only house in this place is a magnet to the visitors.

House No.1 – a charming cottage with Tudor-style architecture was used as a holiday retreat in the past. It was built in 1930s by Langdon Williams, a Chief Surveyor at that time.

The unique house has been conserved and used as a museum now.

Opening Hours:
8.30 am - 6.00 pm

Important telephone numbers:

  • 6542-8664 (Pulau Ubin Police Post)
  • 6542-4108 (Management Office)

How to get there?
Take a bumboat to Pulau Ubin, hire a van or rent a bicycle and follow the sign board to the Wetlands.

Don’t forget to ask for a bicycle lock when you rent it because you have to park your bicycle at designated lots near Punai Hut.

Walking is not encouraged but if you want to do that it will take about 40 to 60 minutes from Pulau Ubin main village.
