The Oldest Anglican Church,
St Andrew’s Cathedral: See, Touch, and Feel the Glorious of the Past

One morning I saw the oldest Anglican Church in Singapore, St Andrew’s Cathedral from 10 floor office in Coleman Area. It looks amazing that such an old building blended well with its modern surrounding.

It’s filled up the space nicely. As if it meant to be there. Thanks for preserving this building which first foundation was laid in 1834.

I can’t imagine how the city skylight will look without this Anglican Church.

My legs were pulled to enter St Andrew’s Cathedral and found out that the building indeed beautiful inside and outside.

I saw the sun light shone through the colorful stained glasses created unique color pattern on the old terracotta tiles.

I will recommend you to visit this Cathedral in the morning between 9am to 11am. You’ll see the above too.

I should thank Dilki a Sri Lankan lady who had brought me around the church. Dilki who was well-verse about the history of this place. She told me many interesting stories.

Here it is:

St Andrew's Cathedral - Tour Guide of the Day
  • The first foundation stone of the original church was laid in 1834 and built based on George D. Coleman design with his trademark Palladian style.
  • A tower and spire designed by John Turnbull Thomson was added between 1841 and 1844.
  • Unluckily, St Andrew’s Cathedral was struck by lightning twice.
  • The Cathedral was then designed by Lt-Col. Ronald Macpherson in Gothic Style, with detailed work done by John Bennet and constructed by Indian convict laborers supervised by Major J. F. A. McNair.

  • The Cathedral was named after the patron Saint of Scotland, St Andrew – an Apostle and brother of St Peter.
  • Stained Glass windows in the apse are dedicated to Sir Stamford Raffles, John Crawford, and Maj-Gen. W. B. Butterworth.

Dilki and many others do a volunteer job as a tour guide. So, your visit to St Andrew’s Cathedral will be meaningful and unforgettable.
